What is Ergonomics?

  • Ergonomics is the study of human characteristics for the appropriate design of the living and working environment, or more simply put, fitting the task to the worker.
  • Two types of "Fit" are address in Ergonomics
    1. Physical Fit – can the worker reach the controls?
    2. Psychological Fit – can the worker understand the technical information so that they are able to make correct decision and action the next steps?

Why is Ergonomics Important?

  • Goal of Ergonomics is to make work safe by:
    • Reducing work stresses on workers
    • Increasing worker comfort which allows work to be done more easily and quickly
    • Decreases workplace errors and injuries
