Definition of Working Alone

What does it mean to be "working alone?"

The working alone requirements as per the OH & S Code apply when both of the following conditions are met:

  1. worker is working by himself or herself, and
  2. assistance is not readily available to the worker if there is an emergency or the worker is injured or ill (cannot be seen or heard by another person)

While it is not always hazardous to work alone, it can be when other circumstances are present. Take a moment to ask yourself the below 3 questions to see if assistance to you at your workplace is "Readily Available" in an emergency.

  1. Would other capable people be aware of providing assistance to you if you needed it?
  2. Is it reasonable to expect that other people would be willing to provide assistance to you?
  3. Would assistance be provided in a timely manner?
