Internationally Educated Applicants

This information is for internationally educated medical radiation technologists (MRTs) and electroneurophysiology technologists (ENPs) who seek to be registered to work in Alberta and are not registered to practice in another Canadian province or territory.

The College is committed to being transparent, objective, impartial and procedurally fair in our application process. Any additional costs associated with obtaining required documentation (e.g., external credential evaluation and authentication, obtaining transcripts), as well as fulfilling other requirements (e.g. English Language Assessment tests, document translation, etc.) are the responsibility of the applicant. A summary of the estimated fees for the additional third-party costs affiliated with the application process and registration with the College can be found in the Third-Party Fees for Internationally Educated Technologists Applying to the ACMDTT document. The College has no part in setting the external fees.

The following steps are required for registration at the College:

Step 1: Read the information guide.

The College’s Information Guide for Internationally Educated Applicants outlines the assessment process and lists the documentation required to complete your application.

Step 2: Complete and submit Parts 1, 2 and 4 of your application and pay the fees.

Submit Part 1, 2 and 4 of the Application for Registration: Internationally Educated Applicant and pay the application fee of $100 and assessment fee of $300 (CAD) for each specialty in which you are applying. This can be completed before arriving in Alberta, Canada.

Step 3: Submit all applicable documents.

Submit all required documents and applicable supporting documents for assessment by the Registration Committee. This can be completed before arriving in Alberta, Canada.

Required documents

These are necessary for assessing your substantial equivalence. Staff may present your file for Committee review upon receiving most of these documents.

  • Specialty-specific self-assessment of practice

Provide evidence of relevant professional experience:

  • Currency of practice hours form or equivalent information by calendar year on organization/facility letterhead
  • If you practiced the profession, provide evidence of relevant professional experience in your specialty in the five years immediately previous to the time of application:
    • An applicant for registration in their primary area of practice is expected to have completed at least 800 working hours of practice in the appropriate area of practice within the five years immediately preceding the date the registrar receives a complete application.
    • An applicant for registration in their secondary area of practice is expected to have completed at least 160 working hours of practice in the appropriate area of practice within the five years immediately preceding the date the Registrar receives a complete application.

    Complete the Currency of Practice Hours form (Part 2 of the application). Equivalent information by calendar year on organization/facility letterhead is also accepted.

    If you graduated within the last two years and have never practiced the profession after completing your education in the profession, you are exempt from the practice hours requirement.

  • Specialty-specific competency checklist

NOTE: Some of these organizations require you to obtain separate assessments for immigration and for other purposes (e.g., licensing). Please ensure you submit the correct type of document to the College.

  • Reference letter
    • A minimum of one letter is required:
      • If you have been employed in the profession, the reference letter(s) should be provided from your employer(s) in the five years previous to the time of application, on organization/facility letterhead, and may include your title and key responsibilities, dates of employment, description of practice setting, type of equipment used, statement of existing/lack of professional conduct issues during employment and beliefs regarding your ability to engage in safe and competent practice.
      • If you have never been employed in the profession, the reference letter should be provided from your instructor or an individual who is not a friend or family member and may include contextual information regarding the author’s relationship with you and beliefs regarding your ability to engage in safe and competent practice.
  • English language assessment
    • The College’s English Language Proficiency Policy requires you to provide evidence of reasonable proficiency in the English language to be able to engage safely and competently in practice in Alberta.
Supporting documents

These documents are useful in assessing your substantial equivalence but not essential to the Committee’s ability to proceed with the assessment process. You are encouraged to support your application with these documents unless it is unreasonable to do so.

  • Current resume 
    • Document showing your background, skills and education in chronological order.
  • Job description from the last employment setting
    • If you practiced the profession in another jurisdiction, a document from your employer or supervisor could be submitted showing the most recent job description of the role.
  • Copy of diploma and/or degree
  • Evidence of registration with an association or a regulatory body
    • If applicable, provide evidence of registration with an association, society, regulatory body or authority charged with oversight of the profession in the jurisdiction(s) of your last practice.
  • Curriculum objectives from an applied program of study
    • Syllabus of your courses.
  • Evidence of continuing education
  • Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics
    • If applicable, include the Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics of an association, society, regulatory body or authority charged with oversight of the profession in your most recent country of practice.
  • Any other additional information you wish to support your application

**If your name is different than indicated on other documents, please provide us with proof of name change by way of a government-issued document.

All documents are required in English. The College accepts translated documents from a variety of sources. In certain circumstances, which may include but are not limited to war, natural disasters, extreme violence, and political persecution, it may be difficult for an applicant to submit the required documents. The College will consider alternative documentation requests on a case-by-case basis. Please see the Additional Registration Information page for more information.

Step 4: Receive confirmation and next steps from the College.

Your application will be forwarded by the College to the Registration Committee once your application is complete* and you will receive a confirmation email that includes the next steps.

Registration Committee

Registration Committee members are appointed by Council. They are responsible for considering applications for registration upon referral by the Registrar, and for making decisions with respect to applications for registration upon referral by the Registrar in accordance with the Health Professions Act and the Medical Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologists Profession Regulation.

Please note that the Registration Committee meets approximately every two months, although the Committee can meet more often if required. If you are submitting an Application for Registration: Internationally Educated Applicant, you should endeavour to meet the submission deadlines above to have your application reviewed at the corresponding Registration Committee meeting date.

*An application is considered complete when the College has received your application form and all required documents listed in Step 3. We encourage you to submit supporting documents as well where possible, but please note these must also be received by the submission deadline to be included with your application.

Step 5: Complete and provide any further requirements specified by the College.

Complete and provide evidence of any other requirements for registration as specified by the registration committee; for example, you may be required to successfully challenge an entry-to-practice certification exam or complete specific courses or a clinical assessment. The Registration Committee will direct you to complete these requirements within a specified time line: if the Registration Committee defers your application for registration, you can expect to have five years from the last or most recent date of your employment as a medical radiation technologist or electroneurophysiology technologist or two years as a recent graduate to complete all the requirements to become registered.

The College takes into account a variety of factors in determining whether an applicant experienced exceptional circumstances that warrant an exception or exemption to registration requirements within the stipulated timelines. The Health Professions Act also provides that applicants who receive a decision and reasons from the Registrar or Registration Committee can have their decision appealed to the Council of the College. Entry-to-practice certification exam

The following approved certification examinations are accepted by the College:

  • The Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) entry-to-practice certification examinations for radiological technology, nuclear medicine, radiation therapy and magnetic resonance. Visit the CAMRT website to learn more about the exams and access available resources.
  • L’Ordre des technologues en imagerie médicale, en radio-oncologie et en électrophysiologie médicale du Québec (OTIMROEPMQ) for entry-to-practice certification examinations for radiodiagnostics, nuclear medicine and radiation therapy.   • The Canadian Board of Registration of Electroencephalograph Technologists (CBRET) entry-to-practice examination for electroneurophysiology technologists. Visit the CBRET website to learn more about the exam and access available resources.
Step 6: Complete your application.

Once you have met all the requirements set by the Registration Committee, you will be directed to complete your application:

Step 7: Receive confirmation from the College and start practicing the profession.

Once you have completed all the general registration requirements, you will receive confirmation from the College that you are currently registered and allowed to practice in Alberta.

Exam Preparation Courses (online)

There are three courses available to internationally educated MRTs (IEMRTs):

  • Radiographic Procedures and Pathology (applicable to radiological technology only)
  • Patient Management (applicable to all specialties)
  • Radiographic Equipment and Imaging (applicable to radiological technology only)

These courses were developed with government funding to help prepare the IEMRT for writing the certification exam. Each course costs approximately $350; please see the CAMRT website for current pricing.

CAMRT Practice Exam

CAMRT has developed 100-question practice exams for each discipline as an exam preparation tool to assist candidates who intend to write the national certification exam in the specialties of medical radiation technology. The practice exam registration fee is approximately $75 (please see the CAMRT website for current pricing) and includes 3 attempts at the practice exam.
