RISK: Sources & Transmission of Biological Hazards around your Workplace

Biological Hazards can be transmitted directly or indirectly. There are 3 main exposure sources involved in transmission that you should think about at your workplace to assess your risk:

People

  • Transmit organisms between one another through direct contact with infectious droplets or airborne particles from secretions

Equipment

  • Equipment or work surfaces that have been inadequately cleaned and disinfected can transmit infection as can needlestick injuries

Environment

  • Sources of infectious disease transmission related to environmental causes include housekeeping and waste management practices
  • Building construction and maintenance that may release fungi, or viruses that are present within building structure and furnishings
