Hazard Assessment

    To assess the hazards at your workplace, you have to know what to look for and think about the "what if" situations that may affect safety for everyone.

    • A hazard is defined as a situation, condition or thing that may be dangerous to the safety or health of workers (Part 1 of the OH & S Code)

    To help you be aware of the hazards at your workplace, think about the four hazard categories listed below and the sources of hazards which include, people, equipment, materials and your environment.

    1. Physical hazards
      • Using the same equipment all day long
      • Inadequate lighting
      • Tripping or falling
      • Radiation
    2. Biological hazards
      • Being in contact with materials where viruses or bacteria are present
      • Being in contact with moulds
    3. Chemical hazards
      • Using toxic chemicals
    4. Psychosocial Hazards
      • Intimidation, verbal abuse
      • Rotating shift work and working alone
