Statement On Edmonton Sonographer Facing Sexual Assault Charge
The Alberta College of Medical Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologists (the College) is deeply concerned with the charges laid against an Edmonton sonographer, Aasim Syed Ahmed, regarding the sexual assault of a patient at his clinic.
The College is committed to the protection of public safety and promotion of the public interest within its regulatory sphere. Regulation has invaluable benefits for members of the profession and the public, including managing complaints of unprofessional conduct. Currently, diagnostic medical sonographers are not regulated as a profession in Alberta.
The College has been engaged in an ongoing collaborative effort with Alberta Health to make essential amendments to the legislation and governing documents which will enable the College to regulate diagnostic medical sonographers (DMSs) throughout Alberta. Once these amendments are made, registration of DMSs will become a requirement, and the College will review the registration of DMSs. In addition, complaints of unprofessional practice against DMSs will be made to, and managed by, the College.
The College urges anyone who has information related to the accused to contact the Edmonton Police Service at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone.
