Did you Know? Over 85% of High Practice Hour Reports Needed Correction

During the 2025 renewal period, 54 registrants reported more than 2,500 practice hours—the equivalent of working 48 hours per week for 52 weeks straight.

This high volume triggered a review by the College, which aimed to help registrants verify their submissions and ensure consistency in reporting hours.

Why the Review? 

The purpose of the review was twofold:

  • For registrants: A chance to double-check reported hours, correct any mistakes, and better understand how to calculate future submissions.
  • For the College: To explore why some reports were so high and gather insights to improve guidance, forms, and possibly develop audit protocols.

What We Found 

All 54 registrants were asked to recalculate their 2024 practice hours based on straight time—meaning only hours actually worked, including regular and overtime hours. The following were not to be included:

  • Sick leave
  • Vacation time
  • Statutory holidays
  • Paid on-call or overtime hours not worked

The results?

  • 85% of registrants had over-reported their hours
  • 9% reported no change
  • 6% increased their hours slightly due to multiple jobs or covering extra shifts

The majority of over-reports came from registrants using year-to-date totals from pay stubs, which included paid but unworked hours like vacation, sick leave, or statutory holidays.

To make your next renewal easier and more accurate:

  • Start tracking your hours now 
  • Keep separate records if you work for more than one employer
  • Count only the hours you actually worked
  • Do not include any paid leave or hours you were compensated for but didn’t work
