The following story is intended to encourage registrants of the Alberta College of Medical Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologists (the College) and their supervisors to consider regulatory scenarios. *All names and scenarios are entirely fictional.

Michelle* has just graduated from a medical radiation technology program but has not yet passed the entry-to-practice examination.

What are the College-mandated conditions for a registrant holding a temporary practice permit for employment?

Michelle will require supervision as a condition of her employment. She has access to the full scope of practice while she holds temporary registration; however, she must be under the supervision of another College registrant when performing restricted activities.

If an appropriate College registrant is not available to supervise, Michelle may seek approval from the College to receive supervision by another regulated healthcare professional authorized to perform the restricted activity.

The supervising regulated healthcare professional must provide indirect supervision, which means they must remain readily available for physical assistance while Michelle performs restricted activities. If Michelle is in the operating room or performing a mobile procedure, the supervisor must be on the same floor and be available to assist. Availability by electronic devices is not acceptable.

As with all regulated members, registrants with temporary practice permits must restrict themselves to performing only those restricted activities in which they are competent and appropriate to their areas of practice.
