New Provincial Bladder Ultrasound Program

2024-03-01T13:06:43-07:00

In February, Council approved the program for Bladder Ultrasound in CCA Radiation Therapy. Bladder scanning may be performed by radiation therapists with an enhanced license in CT simulator areas or on external beam treatment units in the CCA radiation therapy departments. Bladder scanning is done in a clinical environment where patient comfort and safety is maximized and confidentiality is maintained at all times. This program replaces the previous Handheld Ultrasound Bladder Scanner Training that existed in only some radiation [...]

Social Media Guidelines

2024-03-01T13:28:33-07:00

Earlier this month, the College released a new document to guide our regulated members in making informed decisions when using social media. As professionals granted the privilege of self-regulation by Albertans, MRTs and ENPs are expected to uphold the integrity of the profession by engaging in social media thoughtfully and responsibly. Our social media guidelines suggest that by being careful and mindful about concerns like professionalism and privacy when using social media, MRTs and ENPs can protect themselves while [...]

Perspectives – Contrast agents via a central venous catheter

2024-03-01T13:49:14-07:00

Drew is a radiological technologist working in the CT department. Drew is sometimes asked to administer contrast agents via a central venous catheter, such as a PICC line. Is this activity within Drew’s scope of practice? The ACMDTT has approval for members to perform some/all of the restricted activities, as identified in the Medical Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologists Profession Regulation (the Regulation). The Regulation states that all regulated radiological technologists are authorized to perform the following restricted activity: 17(1)(b) [...]

Behind the Desk – Alana L.

2024-03-07T10:36:25-07:00

In this edition of Behind the Desk, we would like to introduce to you Alana L., who works at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Grande Prairie as an MRI Lead in Diagnostic Imaging. How did you decide MRI as career path for you? During my radiography training, I had a mentor in MRI scanning who encouraged me to consider MRI as a modality in the future. At the time, MRI was a new emerging technology and it looked really [...]

Integration of MRI into Radiation Therapy

2024-03-07T10:46:46-07:00

Evolving technology and the growing use of multiple forms of imaging are blurring the lines between the disciplines of medical radiation technology. MRI is quickly becoming a standard imaging modality in radiation therapy for planning and treatment. In 2013, when this technology was in its nascent stages in Alberta, the College approved an education program to issue enhanced practice authorization allowing radiation therapists to safely and competently use MRI in conjunction with radiotherapy on a linear accelerator or radiation [...]

Alex is a nuclear medicine technologist working in a radiology department. The department is considering allowing nuclear medicine technologists to inject a small amount of radiotracer for sentinel lymph node imaging. Is this activity within Alex’s scope of practice? The College has approval for members to perform some/all of the restricted activities, as identified in the Medical Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologists Profession Regulation (the Regulation). The Regulation states that nuclear medicine technologists are authorized to perform the following restricted activity: 15(1)(d) [...]

Behind the Desk – Michelle L.

2024-03-07T10:59:28-07:00

In this edition of Behind the Desk, we highlight a College member in Calgary who has chosen to practice in nuclear medicine technology. Michelle L. gives us a glimpse into why she chose nuclear medicine, what her work day involves and her insights into the profession. What intrigued you to enter this profession? The part that intrigued me the most to become a nuclear medicine technologist is working with radioactive isotopes such as Technetium 99m and F-18. As I [...]

Do you see what I see?

2024-03-08T09:44:33-07:00

Author: Sherri Priestly, MRT(R) Have you ever had a frustrating interaction with an orthopedic surgeon? Unfortunately, it has been my experience as an x-ray tech that this happens on a regular basis. Recently, I have been reflecting about this and asking why. Why is there frustration and tension between x-ray techs and orthopedic surgeons? Aren’t we all on the same team? Don’t we have the same goals? One goal that we share is our concern for patient outcomes, what [...]
