Too Many Practice Hours? Review Aims to Educate

Posted: March 21, 2025
CATEGORY: News, Registration

Starting March 24, the Alberta College of Medical Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologists (the College) will review high practice hours reported by registrants.

Some registrants have reported working more hours than expected for a full-time position, with some claims reaching up to 4000 hours per year. Most full-time practitioners report between 2000 and 2400 hours.

Review on 2500+ Reported Hours

This review will focus on those who reported 2500 hours or more on their 2025 Annual Renewal. These registrants will need to recalculate their practice hours following College criteria and explain any differences by April 23, 2025.

Notices will be sent to selected registrants on March 24, 2025.

Why Review?

This review is an opportunity for selected registrants to:

  • Ensure that their reported practice hours for 2024 are correct.
  • Fix any errors, if necessary.
  • Learn how to accurately calculate their practice hours for future renewals.
    • Regular and overtime practice hours must be counted exactly as worked, hour-for-hour. This is also called straight time.
    • Hours should not include:
      • Vacation
      • Sick leave
      • Other leave(s) hours that were paid but not worked
      • Overtime and on-call hours that were paid and not worked

The College also wants to understand why some registrants report such high hours. This will help improve future guidance and forms related to the renewal process. Eventually, this review may develop into an audit.
