Audit on Professional Liability Insurance affects 530 Registrants
For selected individuals, an audit is coming soon to ensure College registrants have personal Professional Liability Insurance (PLI).
On their renewal or registration application form, registrants declared they would have personal PLI in place that meets College requirements. The audit will confirm that this statement is true or ensure it is true by the end of the audit process.
The College expects registrants will find the audit process quick and easy. It requires completing a short form and uploading a copy of their PLI policy certificate or written confirmation from the insurer. Employer’s liability insurance is not acceptable.
2025 Audit Process
On January 20 and February 24, two groups of randomly selected registrants will receive an initial email notification with instructions on how to submit their proof of PLI within 30 days. The College will audit 20% of registrants, approximately 530 people. Registrants can check if they’ve been selected by checking their email or by logging in to My Profile.
Consequences for those who do not have PLI for 2025, did not submit the audit form, or did not submit the correct proof of insurance certificate by the 30-day deadline may include:
- A condition placed on their practice permit with requirements for further action.
- A referral to the Complaints Director.
More information is available at Professional Liability Insurance (PLI) Audit.
Protection by personal PLI
Personal PLI financially protects registrants when a complaint of unprofessional conduct is made against them. It typically covers items like:
- claims of negligent practice, incorrect care, or failure to provide care
- claims of sexual abuse or misconduct
- coverage when a complaint leads to an investigation by the regulator
- allegations of unprofessional conduct outside the employment setting, such as in personal interactions, social media posts, personal communications, or volunteering
Costs could quickly run into the thousands to mount a defence for these allegations.
The audit was first announced in September.
