Perspectives – Scope of Practice

2024-03-01T10:20:57-07:00

Siobhan is a radiological technologist working in a clinic. Within the next few months, the clinic will be starting to perform cystograms, a procedure that requires the insertion and removal of catheters. Is this activity within Siobhan’s scope of practice? The College has approval for members to perform some/all of the restricted activities, as identified in the Medical Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologists Profession Regulation (the Regulation). The Regulation states that radiological technologists are authorized to perform the following restricted [...]

Professional Practice and Mandatory Registration

2024-03-01T11:16:32-07:00

The Health Professions Act (HPA) states that every person who meets the College’s registration requirements and intends to practice the profession of medical radiation or electroneurophysiology technology must apply for registration with the College. Practice involves not only the clinical and technical aspects of the profession; it also includes, but is not limited to, functions of education, management, research and administration. Essentially, this means that if you have the necessary qualifications, you must apply for registration if you will be working [...]

Change to PLI requirement

2024-03-01T11:00:15-07:00

The College now requires regulated members to hold professional liability insurance (PLI) that covers a minimum of $2,000,000 per occurrence (previously $1,000,000). A review of the most common PLI policies held by our members (e.g., CAMRT, AHS and Medical Imaging Ed) shows that they already meet this new standard; however, all regulated members should verify that their current policy offers sufficient coverage. MRTs and ENPs who work in multiple practice locations should ensure that they have insurance coverage for [...]

Perspectives – Interventional Procedure

2024-03-01T11:14:23-07:00

Daniel is a radiological technologist working in interventional radiology. The next procedure he will be involved in is an IVC filter insertion. The radiologist has decided to use a femoral approach (access). He has asked Daniel to prepare the patient’s right groin area for the procedure. Daniel approaches the patient and explains what he is about to do. Daniel lowers the sheet to expose the groin area, keeping the genital area covered. He then shaves the area where the [...]

Response to CAMRT position statement

2024-03-01T11:21:15-07:00

Last month, the CAMRT released a position statement titled “Discontinuing the Use of Gonadal and Fetal Shielding for Patients.” The College released a response to this statement after receiving some inquiries from members about it to clarify that there has been no change made to the provincial regulations or the College’s Standards of Practice regarding the use of radiation protection devices. The role of an association like the CAMRT is very different from the role of a regulatory college, and that [...]

Perspectives – ENP Enhanced Practice Authorization

2024-03-01T11:38:54-07:00

Courtenay is an ENP who works in a large urban centre. Courtenay has been approached by their supervisor to be trained in intraoperative monitoring (IOM). When performing IOM, ENPs utilize a variety of tests to assess the functional status of the patient’s nervous system throughout the surgical procedure while the patient is under anesthesia. Surgeons use IOM to help guide surgical decision-making during procedures (e.g., scoliosis correction, spine surgery, epilepsy surgery, brain, spinal cord tumours) to prevent devastating outcomes, [...]

Status of Vaccine Availability for MRTs and ENPs

2024-03-01T13:08:23-07:00

The College has received a number of queries from members about the status of their COVID-19 vaccination eligibility. We understand that some of our members regularly come into contact with patients who have tested positive for COVID-19 and are concerned; however, decisions related to pandemic response are not within the scope of the College. Decisions about the vaccine rollout are made by the provincial government and AHS. Advocating for members is also outside the scope of a regulatory college. [...]
