ACMDTT Welcomes Diagnostic Medical Sonographers as Regulated Professionals
Starting July 6, 2026, Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (DMS) in Alberta will be officially regulated by the Alberta College of Medical Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologists (ACMDTT).
Regulation gives Albertans an added layer of protection when they receive an ultrasound. Every DMS registrant will be required to meet clear qualification requirements, follow standards of practice, maintain competence, and be accountable to a professional college if concerns are raised about their care.
“Regulating DMS is an important step in strengthening public protection in Alberta,” said Jason Livingstone, Chair of the ACMDTT Council. “Council is pleased to support this milestone and the added clarity it brings for patients, employers and the profession.”
For the health system and organizations that employ sonographers, this change brings new requirements to understand and apply in practice. The ACMDTT has resources available to help explain what regulation means for employers, health-system partners and registrants.
For sonographers, regulation means formal recognition as a regulated health profession in Alberta and a clear connection to the College that will oversee their practice.
“DMS have long played an important role in Alberta’s health system,” said Lyndsay Arndt, Registrar and CEO of the ACMDTT. “We are pleased to formally welcome them into ACMDTT and support them as they join Alberta’s regulated health profession system. We also want to recognize the College staff, Council, DMS, employers, government partners and other stakeholders who contributed to this work.”
The ACMDTT is the regulatory body responsible for overseeing medical diagnostic and therapeutic technologists in Alberta, ensuring safe, competent, and ethical care for the public.
