What Employers Need to Know: Regulation of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers in Alberta
- As of July 6, Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (DMS) in Alberta are regulated under the Health Professions Act (HPA).
- All practicing DMS must be registered with the College.
- Employers are responsible for verifying registration and practice permit status effective July 6, 2026.
- The Pre-Regulatory Record (PRR) is a temporary process that allows currently practising DMS in Alberta to have their information reviewed in advance to be eligible for registration without interruption when regulation takes effect on July 6, 2026.
Employment verification and practice hours
As part of the Pre-Regulatory Record (PRR) registration process, individuals must provide verification of their employment and/or practice hours for the past 5 years.
If you are contacted by an employee or the College, you are required to provide an Employment Verification Letter.
This letter must be on company letterhead and include:
- the employee’s full name
- job title
- specialty (if applicable)
- employment dates
- full- or part-time status
- hours worked
- Status with current certifying body (Sonography Canada, ARDMS) and membership category
- Supervisor name and contact information, email address, and phone number
💡Only one file can be uploaded in the employment verification section for each employer on the application form. If you need to submit both your membership card and your employment verification letter, please combine them into a single PDF or upload a single photo that clearly shows both documents.
For individuals who are no longer employed by your organization, the College will also require confirmation that the individual has completed:
- a minimum of 800 practice hours in their primary specialty, and
- a minimum of 160 practice hours in each secondary and tertiary specialty, if applicable
If exact hour tracking is not available, reasonable estimates may be provided based on the individual’s typical workload and scope of practice.
NOTE: A DMS must have their primary specialty approved before they can apply for additional specialties.
Employees with multiple roles or credentials
Some employees may hold credentials in more than one profession (for example, an RN who also holds a DMS credential), or may work in roles where the job title does not clearly reflect the duties they perform.
In these situations, the College will require information from the employer to understand whether the individual is practicing as a DMS.
Employers may be required to provide and/or confirm:
- the employee’s current role and job title
- a current job description (if available)
- a description of the duties the employee performs in practice
- clarification of whether the employee holds separate roles or positions, including roles in other professions or organizations
This information allows the College to determine whether the individual is practising as a DMS. The assessment is based on the work being performed, not only on their job title.
How to verify PRR status before July 6, 2026?
- Once the PRR is approved, DMSs can download a permit from the College portal. Please ask the individual to provide a PDF copy of the permit confirming their PRR approval.
- NOTE: The payment receipt is not a valid proof of PRR approval
