Meetings and Visitor Info

  • February 8, 2025
All visitors attending Council meetings must abide by the guidelines set out below.

Guidelines for Visitors

Agenda

Please refer to the meeting agenda available in the Council boardroom or available in hardcopy from College staff.

Disruption to Ongoing Operations

We ask that visitors respect the need to minimize disruption to ongoing operations of the College during Council meetings and contain their attendance to the reception and boardroom areas of the College.

Interview

Members of the press who wish to arrange an interview must make prior arrangements through the Corporate Services Administrator.

Observer Status

Visitors are welcome but they are here as observers only. Visitors are asked to abstain from applause and making any interruptions or disturbances during the meeting. Visitors may be asked to leave if they do not maintain observer status in the strictest sense.

All visitors are to provide their name and contact information in advance to the Corporate Services Administrator.

Guidelines for Closure of Council Meetings

As required under the Health Professions Act, meetings of Council will be open unless the Council determines that part of the meeting shall be held in-camera. The decision to close any portion of the meeting is one that will be debated in a closed session by the full Council and will be supported by written reasons documented in the minutes.

Council will deliberate whether the potential concerns around discussing the issue in the open outweigh the principle of the openness.

The following guidelines define those issues for which closure of the meeting may be considered:

  • Matters involving public security.
  • Matters where financial, personal or other information may be released of such a nature that the desirability of avoiding public disclosure of them in the interest of the individual(s) outweighs the desirability of adhering to the principle of openness.
  • Matters where a person involved in a criminal proceeding or civil suit or proceeding may be prejudiced through disclosure.
  • Matters where personnel matters will be discussed.
  • Matters where acquisition of property (land) will be discussed.
  • Matters where instructions will be given to or opinions received from the College’s solicitors or College business.
  • Matters where the risk to the College outweighs the adherence to openness.

How to Apply

Appointment Process

College registrants on the general register may apply for an appointment to Council.

The Selection Committee will assess and interview applicants to ensure they meet the requirements of the Health Professions Act (HPA), bylaws and Council policy and make recommendations to Council on appointments for the vacant position(s).
Appointments are based on the applicant’s attributes and competencies, including experience, knowledge, and skills.

Applications and all related processes are confidential; only the names of appointed members are published.

See Council Recruitment Process below.

Council serves as the governing body for the College. Per the Bylaws, Council consists of:

  • Six eligible registrants, including, where possible, one registrant from each specialty and one registrant who also practices ultrasound; and
  • Six government-appointed public members.

Council is responsible for:

  • Defining the College’s strategic goals.
  • Assessing operational outcomes, planning for succession, and overseeing the CEO.
  • Establishing, maintaining, and monitoring policies for the College, including bylaws, regulations, Standards of Practice, and the Code of Ethics.
  • Approving programs of study for entry-to-practice education for MRTs and ENPs in Alberta.
  • Reviewing and overseeing fiscal policies and statements, as well as understanding the financial status of the College

Council also has specific legislative duties to hear conduct and registration appeals.

Council is accountable for upholding the public interest through responsible governance of the College and its activities.

Guided by the College’s Strategic Plan, Council works diligently and collaboratively with staff, registrants, and other partners to address emerging challenges and opportunities, always prioritizing its commitment to protecting the public interest and ensuring the profession operates in a safe, ethical, and competent manner.

As a Council member, you can expect:

  • To enhance your leadership skills and gain valuable experience in governance and decision-making that prioritizes public protection.
  • To collaborate with other professionals, fostering relationships that strengthen the College’s ability to uphold its mission and mandate.
  • To contribute to the College’s mission and strategic goals, ensuring the profession maintains high standards of safety, ethics, and competence in the public interest.

It is essential for Council members to possess a diverse set of competencies—knowledge, skills, attitudes, and judgment—necessary to protect and serve the public interest under the College’s mandate. While we acknowledge that no single Council member will embody all the competencies outlined by the College, it is our goal that the Council demonstrates strengths across these key areas collectively.

To find out more, see our interactive guide:

Being a Council member requires a commitment of time and energy. Council members are expected to:

  • Attend scheduled Council meetings (four one-day Council meetings per year, typically held in Edmonton or Calgary on a Saturday, and one half-day virtual meeting).
  • Participate as a member of a Council Workgroup that meets virtually every 6-8 weeks for 1 – 1.5 hours on a weekday evening.
  • Attend additional strategic planning sessions, education sessions or events as necessary.
  • Prepare for meetings.
  • Travel to meetings when necessary.
  • Provide input on issues as they arise between Council meetings.
  • Be engaged and participate in all Council functions.
