To practice as a medical radiation technologist (MRT) or an electroneurophysiology technologist (ENP) in Alberta, you must be registered with the College and hold an active practice permit.  

The College defines the practice of an MRT or ENP to include a wide range of activities, including clinical practice, education, management, research, and administration functions.  

You must not practice (work or volunteer) as an MRT or ENP or use the MRT or ENP title in Alberta until you have received written confirmation from the College that your registration was approved, and your practice permit has been issued.  

Additionally, you cannot participate in an orientation or training without first being issued a practice permit.  

Please note:  

  • The required supporting documents included with your application must be accurate, authentic, and provided in English. If your documents are in a language other than English, you must have them translated into English. 
  • You are responsible for all costs associated with the registration application and required supporting documentation. 
  • Your qualifications for registration are reviewed in a manner designed to be transparent, objective, impartial, and procedurally fair.

Personal Information and Contact Details You must have proof of identification and up-to-date contact details.

You can prove your identity by providing a copy of your:

  • birth certificate; or,
  • authentic, valid, and current government-issued photo identification; or,
  • valid Indian status or Métis citizenship card.

If your legal name differs from the name on any of your application verification documents, include a copy of a legal document verifying your name change. Example: A marriage certificate or a legal name change.

There are no other ways to fulfill this requirement.  

 

 

Post Secondary Education You must be competent in the practice of MRT or ENP.

You can show that you are competent in the practice of MRT or ENP by providing a copy of your:

  • Official (final) transcript of academic record;

OR

  • Copy of your diploma.

Currency of Practice

Substantial Equivalency

You must have recent professional experience practicing as an MRT or ENP.

You can show professional practice experience by providing:

  • Proof you graduated from an approved MRT or ENP program of study within the past two (2) years;

OR

  • Proof of your relevant practice experience as an MRT or ENP in the last 5 years.
    • Primary Specialty – practice hours
    • Secondary Specialty – practice hours

You may:

  • return to, and practice in, a jurisdiction where you are registered and subsequently provide currency of practice information; OR,
  • undergo an evaluation that the College approves, and complete any additional training, experience, examinations, or assessments the College identifies based on the length of time it has been since you last practiced.

English Language Proficiency

You must be reasonably proficient in the English language.

You can show English language proficiency by providing:

  • Proof you graduated from a College-approved MRT or ENP program of study that was provided in the English language.
  • Proof you passed formal English language testing .

Good Character

Good Character and Reputation

You must be of good character and reputation.

You can show good character and reputation by providing:

  • Answers to the registration application questions about your suitability to practice, such as:
    • any current or previous professional misconduct
    • any current or previous criminal matters
    • any conditions/restrictions on practice by other professional regulatory authorities
    • civil judgments concerning professional practice
    • anything else that may harm your fitness to practice as an MRT or ENP and,
  • An accurately completed Character Declaration Form.
  • Verification of standing from other professional regulators where you hold or previously held registration and practice rights, if applicable.
There are no other ways to fulfill this requirement.
Criminal Record Check You must obtain a Criminal Reference Check.

You can show the results of a Criminal Record Check (or a police certificate) by providing:

  • An original or notarized copy of the results of your criminal record check or a police certificate, with a vulnerable sector check, no older than 90 days from submission of application.

Professional Liability Insurance

You must hold current personal Professional Liability Insurance (PLI) policy that meets the requirements of the College.

You can show the required PLI by providing:

  • a copy of your professional liability insurance policy certificate;

OR

  • a completed professional liability insurance declaration;

OR

  • proof of third-party liability insurance.

There are no other ways to fulfill this requirement.

 

Proof of employer-provided professional liability insurance will not be accepted.
