Practice Permit Renewal for 2025 opened Oct. 1, 2024

Maintaining your College registration is one of the most important legal obligations for all medical radiation and electroneurophysiology technologists practicing in Alberta.

Who can apply for Renewal?

This process applies to you if:

  • You have a current practice permit with the College, and you want to continue to practice or resign your registration.

Under the Health Professions Act (HPA) and the Medical Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologists Profession Regulation (the Regulation), all College registrants are required to renew their practice permit each year to be legally authorized to practice the profession of medical radiation or electroneurophysiology technology in Alberta.

Options for Leave, Moving, Retirement, or Resignation

If you are on or planning to be on leave (including maternity/paternity), or are moving out of Alberta, retiring, or want to resign your registration, you have two options:

This is the easiest and most convenient option if you plan to return to practice in Alberta soon.

  • You Must:
    • Complete Continuing Competence Program (CCP) requirements.
    • Have Profession Liability Insurance

This is the best option if you will not be practicing or are unsure about returning to practice in Alberta for an extended period.

  • Before Resigning:
    • Log in to My Profile and complete all Continuing Competence Program requirements until your resignation date.
    • Pay any outstanding invoices.
    • Verify with your Professional Liability Insurance provider that your policy includes Policy Continuation to cover claims for any incidents that may have occurred while you were actively practicing.
  • After Resigning:
    • You cannot work as an MRT or ENP.
    • You cannot use protected titles associated with these professions.

After Resignation, Returning to Practice (Reinstatement)

If you resigned and want to return to practice, follow the Reinstatement Application process:

We recommend submitting your Reinstatement Application at least 6 weeks before you plan to return to work. The College will assess your application to ensure it meets the stated registration requirements and issue you a decision letter.

If you don’t meet all registration requirements, you may be required to undergo additional practice assessments to determine competency. Timing and fees are based on individual circumstances.

NEW FOR 2025

After receiving feedback on last year’s Renewal process, you can expect notable upgrades this year to elevate your experience, ease frustration, and protect your practice.

The biggest changes include removing supervisor approvals and requiring personal Professional Liability Insurance.

Important Dates

  • October 1, 2024: RENEWAL OPENS. The online Renewal system opens. Log in to My Profile. The Renewal Fee is $450.
  • November 30, 2024: RENEW BY THIS DATE. Renewals submitted after this date are subject to an additional $150 administration fee.
  • December 15, 2024: RENEW TO AVOID DELAYS. To avoid delays in receiving your 2025 practice permit, submit your Renewal before December 15 as manual processing may be required.
  • December 24 – January 1, 2025: COLLEGE OFFICE CLOSED. Renewals that require manual processing and are received after December 23 will be processed starting January 2.
  • December 31, 2024: RENEWAL CLOSES. The online Renewal system, My Profile, closes.
  • January 1, 2025: Registrants who have not submitted their Renewal (have not submitted their application, are in default of payment of the Renewal fee or fail to pay any other fees, costs, levies or assessments) may have their practice permit administratively suspended and must immediately stop working. They must contact the College to complete their Renewal.
  • February 12, 2025: Registrants whose practice permits were administratively suspended and have not resolved their status with the College will have their permit and registration administratively cancelled.

In late December, employers will be notified about any registrants we have listed as employees who have not yet completed Renewal so they can plan around potential service disruptions.
