Registration is mandatory.
To practice as a Medical Radiation Technologist (MRT) in Alberta, you must be registered with the College and hold an active practice permit.
Who can Apply as an Internationally Educated MRT Applicant?
This route applies to you if you graduated from an MRT program of study outside of Canada:
- Within the last two (2) years, but you have not yet practiced in your specialty; or
- Have recent practice experience outside of Canada.
- Have never practiced in Canada.

How to Apply
Submit Application
After You Apply
Within three (3) business days after you apply, the College will email you to confirm your application has been successfully submitted.
- Once you receive an email from the College, pay the Application Fee on the College Portal.
- Your application will be reviewed only after the application fee is paid.
- Once reviewed, you will then receive another email to pay your Assessment Fee.
- The fee is for the Substantial Equivalency Assessment to determine whether your education, professional experience, and clinical practice meet Alberta MRT competency requirements.
Within fifteen (15) business days after your invoice is paid, the College will assess your application
- Once your application is reviewed, the College will notify you if it is incomplete and provide instructions on completing it.
- If your application remains incomplete or inactive for three (3) months, it will be closed, and you will need to reapply.
OR
Within fifteen (15) business days after confirming a complete application, the College will assess your application.
- Once complete, the College will assess your application to ensure it meets the stated registration requirements and issue you a decision letter within thirty (30) business days.
The College aims to meet these timelines, however, some applications may be more complex. If the College requires more time to make a decision, you will be notified. According to legislation, the College has up to six (6) months to make a registration decision.
Your decision letter will outline the next steps and provide you with a deadline to fulfil further requirements.
