The College recognizes someone as an internationally educated MRT or DMS for this process if they:
- completed their formal education outside of Canada;
- have not practiced as an MRT or DMS in Canada;
- are, or will be before registration, lawfully admitted to and entitled to work in Canada; and
- live in Alberta or can confirm that they plan to live or work in Alberta.
Internationally educated MRTs and DMS may come to the College at different stages in the process. Some have already completed a recognized assessment process, while others need the College to complete a Substantial Equivalency Assessment (SEA).
Please review the options below and follow the steps that apply to you.
If this route does not apply to you, see Applicants.
| If you have already completed a recognized assessment | If you need the College to complete a Substantial Equivalency Assessment |
|---|---|
| This applies to you if CAMRT or CMRITO has already assessed you and confirmed that you are eligible to write the certification exam, or if you have already passed the certification exam. | This applies to you if you have not completed a recognized assessment process through CAMRT or CMRITO. |
| Do not submit a Substantial Equivalency Assessment Application. | The Substantial Equivalency Assessment Application is the first step for individuals who need the College to assess whether their education, professional experience, and clinical practice are substantially equivalent to Alberta registration qualifications. |
| Please contact the College at registration@acmdtt.com for next steps. The College will confirm whether you may proceed and through which registration pathway. | This is not an application for registration. |
| If this option applies to you, follow the steps below to submit a Substantial Equivalency Assessment Application. |
How to Apply
Submit Application
After You Apply
After You Submit Your Application for Assessment
After you submit your assessment application, the College will review your file in stages.
Step 1: Confirmation of receipt
- Within three business days, the College will email you to confirm that your assessment application has been received.
Step 2: Pay the application fee
- After you receive confirmation from the College, you must pay the application fee through the College Portal.
- Your assessment application will not move forward until this fee has been paid.
Step 3: Administrative review
- Within 15 business days after the application fee is paid, the College will complete an administrative review of your submission.
- This review is only to confirm that the required documents have been uploaded and that nothing appears to be missing. It is not a review of the content of your education, credentials, assessments, or professional experience.
- If required documents are missing or the wrong document has been uploaded, the College will contact you and explain what is needed.
Step 4: Pay the assessment fee
- Once the administrative review is complete, the College will send you an invoice for the assessment fee.
- Your file will not be referred for assessment until the fee has been paid.
Step 5: Assessment review
- Within 15 business days after the assessment fee is paid, your file will be referred for assessment.
- The assessment team will review your education, professional experience, clinical practice, and other relevant information to determine whether your background meets Alberta MRT or DMS qualifications or whether additional steps are required.
- During the assessment process, the College may contact you for more information, clarification, or documents.
- Depending on the complexity of the assessment application, this process can take up to 6 months.
Step 6: Assessment outcome
- Once the assessment is complete, the College will provide you with an assessment outcome.
- Your assessment outcome will explain:
- whether you are eligible to move forward in the registration process;
- that you must complete the required certification exam;
- any other requirements you must complete;
- which registration pathway is available to you: Newly Certified or Provisional applicant
- any next steps.
- An assessment outcome is not a registration decision, does not place you on a register, and does not authorize you to practice.
- If you are eligible to proceed to registration, you must submit the required registration information and meet all practice permit requirements, including proof of professional liability insurance, a satisfactory criminal record check, payment of applicable fees, and any other requirements that apply.
