Medical radiation technologists (MRTs) and electroneurophysiology technologists (ENPs) are governed by the Health Professions Act (HPA) and the Medical Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologists Profession Regulation (the Regulation) in Alberta.
According to this legislation, every person who practices medical radiation technology or electroneurophysiology technology in Alberta must hold valid and current registration with the Alberta College of Medical Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologists (the College). A registrant’s practice consists of the clinical and technical aspects of the profession, and any functions of education, management, research, and administration.
The College’s mandate is to protect Albertans. To meet this mandate, the College is required to ensure that all registrants meet registration requirements to ensure the currency and competency of their skills and knowledge to practice.
To maintain your general practice permit in Alberta:
- Registrants are required to renew their practice permit by completing the Annual Renewal process between October 1 and December 31. All practice permits expire on December 31.
- Registrants are required to annually complete the Continuing Competence Program (CCP) as a mandatory component of Annual Renewal as outlined in the HPA. Non-compliance with CCP requirements is considered unprofessional conduct and could place renewal of your practice permit at risk.
- Registrants must restrict themselves to performing only those restricted activities that they are competent to perform and are appropriate to their areas of practice and the procedures being performed.
- Registrants must practice the profession in accordance with the Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics.
- Registrants are required to practice a minimum of 800 hours in their primary area of practice and (if applicable) 160 hours in their secondary area of practice within the last five years. Registrants who graduated from an approved educational program and registered to practice within two years of graduation are exempt from this requirement for the first five years after graduation.
- All registrants must have professional liability insurance (PLI) in accordance with the coverage requirements set out by the College.
As a registrant, it is your responsibility to ensure that you continue to meet registration requirements. You can apply for a change of registration type if you do not want to maintain your registration.
