You Asked: About Registration Renewal Fees

In our recent surveys, many registrants had questions about annual renewal fees. You wanted to know what value you are receiving and how these fees compare to other health professionals. We value the opportunity to address those concerns.

Here are five things you should know about your renewal fee with the Alberta College of Medical Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologists (the College).

1.    We haven’t raised fees in 8 years

Inflation is a concern for many, so it’s worth noting that our College hasn’t increased renewal fees for eight years. The last time fees were raised was on January 1, 2016.

2.    Our work is mandated by legislation and regulation

The College was created under the Health Professions Act (HPA), and we operate in accordance with its requirements.

A profession that is privileged to regulate has the responsibility of funding the costs of regulation. As a non-profit organization, we rely on fees paid by registrants as our primary source of funding. All registrant fees are applied towards funding the programs and operations necessary to fulfill our legislated mandate and legal responsibilities.

Our mandate, as set out by the HPA, is to ensure that registrants provide safe, competent, and ethical diagnostic and therapeutic care to the people of Alberta, by:

  • Approving programs of study, education courses and certification exams for the purposes of registration requirements.
  • Registering only MRTs and ENPs who meet our education, training, and competency requirements.
  • Requiring annual registration renewal.
  • Setting and enforcing practice and conduct standards.
  • Administering a mandatory continuing competence program.
  • Maintaining a live, online public register so patients and employers can verify a practitioner’s registration status in real-time.
  • Addressing complaints about our registrants’ professional conduct.
  • Providing expertise and direction on registrants’ practice and on regulatory and health policy.
  • Helping registrants achieve regulatory requirements by providing professional development opportunities and tools to help them interpret and apply the profession’s governing documents.

3.    Our finances are public

An accounting of our finances is available in the Independent Auditor’s Report in every Annual Report. The Statement of Operations provides a breakdown of our revenue and expenses.

4.    How our fees compare provincially

Some registrants asked how much other health professions were being charged in annual fees.

A comparison of other Alberta regulators with the same mandate as our College shows our fees are below equivalent organizations.

Organization  Type Active Registrants Annual Fees
College of Physiotherapists of Alberta Regulator 3200 $805
Alberta College of Dental Hygienists Regulator  3800 $599

Alberta College of Medical Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologists (ACMDTT) Regulator 2686 $450
College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA) Regulator  2500 $425

5. How our fees compare nationally
